A storm that was expected to dump 4 to 8 inches on Pittsburgh today may give evening commuters a break.

The National Weather Service is citing a 'period of possible transition' to rain or sleet late this afternoon or evening in Allegheny County and areas to the south and east before snow returns and intensifies tonight.

As of 7 a.m., 3 inches of snow was reported in Irwin and 2.3 inches in West Mifflin, but most main roads in the district were clear.

A winter storm warning for Allegheny County stretches from 10 a.m. today to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Some areas south and east of the city were under a less-serious winter weather advisory.

A prolonged period of freezing rain was possible in the Laurel Highlands this afternoon and evening, according to the weather service.
