A SWAT team is seen taking families out of houses in the Inglewood neighborhood Tuesday afternoon where two police officers are believed to have been shot

Police in Southern Calfornia are in a standoff with a hostage taker after one officer was shot, according to reports.

Officials told NBC Los Angeles that one of the officers shot at the residence is alert and conscious. The officer was wearing a protective vest at the time.

Another officer was inured, but not wounded by gunfire that erupted just before 1 p.m. PST, the station reported. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The gunman is believed to have holed himself inside a house befiore taking a woman hostage, according to KTLA as swarms of cops and SWAT units converged on the area.

A neighbor, Kimberly Edwards, told KTLA said she lives about 50 feet from the home of the alleged shooter. She saw the man spray officers with a hail of gunfire from a semiautomatic weapon and he's since been yelling at responding officers, she said.

'We're really afraid right now because he's still alive and hollering threats,' said Edwards, who added one female officer was seen being carried from the house while appearing unconscious.

'And a male officer was shot, he was limping,' Edwards told the station.

The neighbor said she saw hostage victim's brother outside the house pleading to a police officer: 'Please get my sister out of the house!'

She said that about two minutes later a semi-automatic weapon was heard firing from inside the home. Approximately five minutes she heard it again.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
