LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) - Authorities say a car accident just outside the lower level of Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport prompted a massive security response Friday night.
The vehicle, described as a minivan, plowed into one of the stairwells of the parking structure just before 8 p.m. Friday.
Aerial footage of the crash showed the vehicle wedged underneath the second-floor stairwell.
But the sound of the accident prompted passengers inside the terminal to self-evacuate out of fear that gunshots were fired.
'Apparently there was a very loud crash. People inside the terminal did not know what was happening. Some people panicked and they self-evacuated from the terminal,' reported KCAL9's Derek Bell.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. It was also not clear if anyone was hurt.
