Richie Incognito reportedly used the ' N-word' on Warren Sapp during a game years ago.

Richie Incognito's racist tendencies go way beyond bullying Miami Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin.

NFL Hall-of-Famer Warren Sapp claims Incognito went full-on bigot on him years ago during a game in an attempt to make him lose his cool.

'One time he kicks me in a game and calls me the 'N-word,'' Sapp revealed on Dan Patrick's radio show Wednesday. 'I look at him and I say, 'Oh, you want me to punch you in the mouth so they kick me out the game?''

Years later, Sapp laughed off the incident as the actions of a desperate opponent trying to gain the upper hand.

'I said, 'That's all you got?''

When pressed by Patrick over the severity of the word, the former Buccaneers and Raiders defensive tackle dismissed it as a 'term of endearment from where I'm from.'

'He (Incognito) don't want to fight, cause the only thing he gotta do is call me after the football game, come over to the locker room and say it after the game.'

While Incognito's racial taunting is a source of amusement for Sapp, the effect on Martin was far more serious.

ESPN reported Wednesday that the Dolphins' second-year offensive tackle recently checked himself into a South Florida hospital to seek treatment for emotional stress, supposedly stemming from the months of bullying at the hands of Incognito.

The Dolphins suspended Incognito late Sunday for his alleged mistreatment of Martin. The next day, media outlets released the contents of voicemails and text messages Incognito reportedly sent Martin over several months.

ESPN reported that Incognito left a voice message to Martin in April of this year saying, 'Hey, wassup, you half-n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. (I want to) s--- in your f---ing mouth. (I'm going to) slap your f---ing mouth. (I'm going to) slap your real mother across the face (laughter). F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you.'

Despite the content and the severity of the abuse, several black teammates are still standing behind Incognito.

One former Dolphins player went so far as to call Incognito an 'honorary' black man.

'Richie is honorary,' the unnamed player told the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. 'I don't expect you to understand because you're not black. But being a black guy, being a brother is more than just about skin color. It's about how you carry yourself. How you play. Where you come from. What you've experienced. A lot of things.'

Several players also told Salguero they consider Incognito to be 'more black' than the bi-racial Martin, who has been labeled 'soft' by some teammates due to his background and his Stanford education

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday appointed New York attorney Ted Wells to direct an independent investigation into the Dolphins' workplace conduct.
