A South Carolina man currently in a mental hospital after being accused of killing his mother and stepfather is on the loose, authorities said.

Jason Mark Carter, 39, eluded security at an undisclosed mental health facility in Columbia early Thursday morning and is still at large, officials said.

Carter was institutionalized in 2009 after he was deemed unfit to stand trial in connection with the brutal slaying of his mother Debra Perkins, 51 and Kevin Perkins, 57, WISTV10 reported.

Carter - who may be traveling stolen white Chevy van - was working at a supply business in the hospital before his escape, the station reported.

It's unclear how he broke out of the facility, but he is considered highly dangerous, the Oconee County Sheriff's office said.

In 2006, the slain couple was found in a basement meticulously wrapped in plastic underneath a mattress after being shot, with the stone-cold accused killer standing over their corpses, the Independent Mail reported.

Carter had racked up fraudulent charges on his stepfather's credit cards prior to the murder, according to the Mail.

A judge later ruled that Carter was unable to determine between right and wrong, sentencing him to the mental hospital.

Carter is described as 5-foot-10, 165 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black coat with a black and white sweater underneath and brown cargo pants, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's office.

Anyone with information on Carter is encouraged to call the Sheriff's office at 864-638-4111, Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or the local police department.
