TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Autopsies are expected for two firefighters killed Sunday while battling a blaze at an apartment complex in northwest Ohio.

A Lucas County deputy coroner told The Blade in Toledo (http://bit.ly/L1L7t6 ) the autopsies were scheduled for Monday.

Toledo's fire chief says 42-year-old Stephen Machcinski and 31-year-old James Dickman were killed Sunday while fighting the fire in a six-unit building near downtown. He says they were injured inside the building, and fellow firefighters made 'valiant efforts' to remove and try to save them.

Machcinski had been a firefighter for 16 years. Dickman was on the job only six months.

The mayor asked that flags be flown at half-staff Monday to honor them.

The newspaper says the last time a Toledo firefighter was killed in an active blaze was 1981.
