New Jersey Driver 'Beaten' As Car Stuck In Snow

A man in New Jersey has told police he was beaten unconscious by two men asking for money after his car got stuck in the snow.


The man said he got stuck on Sunday morning as he tried to enter the car park of a local business.


As he attempted to free his car, two men and a woman approached him to ask for money. When he told them he had nothing, the men beat him, according to the Press of Atlantic City.


He told police that his wallet had been stolen and that he went to hospital with minor injuries.


The reported attack came as the Midwest braced for severe wind chills and freezing temperatures. Travel has already been disrupted and many schools forced to close.


A cold snap has hit the northeast


Temperatures are expected to be well below zero but with wind chills the temperature will be pushed even lower - minus 43F (minus 41C) in Minneapolis, minus 23F (minus 30C) in Chicago, minus 18F (minus 27C) in Dayton, Ohio, minus 14F (minus 25C) in Kansas City, Missouri.


Ice and strong winds were making roads treacherous.


In Indiana, where 50mph gusts were recorded early on Monday, officials recommended only essential travel in many areas of the state.


Michigan expressways closed as snow and sub-freezing temperatures played a role in multiple crashes on Sunday.


At least three people died over the weekend because of weather-related accidents.


New York has suffered snowfall and icy conditions


The Chicago Public Schools called off Monday's classes for its nearly 400,000 students.


Freezing temperatures are expected to hold into Tuesday.


It is one of the coldest winters in memory after the polar vortex brought dumped snow on much of the US several weeks ago.
