Carolyn McCarthy, Mike McIntyre to retire

Two veteran House Democrats, Reps. Carolyn McCarthy of New York and Mike McIntyre of North Carolina, will not seek reelection in 2014, according to multiple Democratic officials and aides.

McIntyre's retirement gives Republicans a pickup opportunity in North Carolina, a state rapidly turning red. House Democrats expect they will be easily able to hold McCarthy's Long Island-based seat.

The 57-year-old McIntyre and 70-year-old McCarthy were both elected in 1996.

McCarthy came to Congress after her husband and son were both shot in a December 1993 incident on the Long Island Railroad. McCarthy's husband, Dennis, was killed, while her son survived the incident.

McCarthy announced in June that she was undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

Republicans have consistently targeted McIntyre's southern North Carolina seat, forcing Democrats to spend piles of money in the Tar Heel State.

'Mike's a talented politician and a nice guy, but there's just no room for folks like him in the Democrat Party anymore,' said Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), who is intimately involved in his party's national and statewide political apparatus. 'His retirement safely puts this seat in Republican hands.'
