The Short List: Hurricane Odile; Peterson back; Microsoft's big buy

Bookmark and Share

Cabo is a mess. Powerful Hurricane Odile hit the southern Baja California peninsula last night, causing a ton of damage. Thankfully, no one died. Odile is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the Baja Peninsula, tied with 1967's Hurricane Olivia. Remnants of Odile and another weather system could combine to bring more heavy rain to the Southwest later in the week. Cities that could be affected by the thunderstorms include Phoenix, Flagstaff, Tucson, Las Vegas, and eventually Salt Lake City. Get your raincoats ready.

Vikings said team isn't in a position to judge how Peterson disciplines his child

The Minnesota Vikings are standing behind Adrian Peterson. The team announced Monday that its star halfback will fully participate in meetings and practice this week and is expected to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Peterson has been charged with abusing his 4-year-old son by spanking him with a wooden switch. Peterson released a statement after the Vikings announcement, which you can read in full here.

Iran's Supreme Leader comes out of prostrate surgery and blasts U.S. on ISILThere was a big conference in Paris today to talk about how to deal with ISIL (the terrorist group responsible for all the horrible beheading videos you've seen lately). Iran wasn't invited. But Iran's Supreme Leader got out of the hospital today after prostate surgery and said the U.S. did want to work with Iran to defeat the terrorist group, and Iran was actually the one that said no we're not helping with your coalition. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking to reporters upon his release from a Tehran hospital, said Washington's aim in building up an international group to fight in Iraq and Syria is to create 'a playground where they can enter freely and bomb at will.' In Paris, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked if Khamenei was telling the truth. Kerry said: 'I have no idea of what interpretation they drew from any discussion that may or may not have taken place.' Say what? 'We are not coordinating with Iran. Period.' Ah, okay. Kerry did add that the U.S. isn't opposed to working with Iran on this issue. This whole thing hurt my brain.

Microsoft buys Minecraft, the digital equivalent of Legos

Microsoft is buying the studio that created the hit game Minecraft. If you don't know what this means, that's why we're here. Breakdown: 2014 is the year of the video game deal. It started in February, when Facebook scooped up virtual reality giant Oculus for $2 billion. Then, late August, Amazon announced it was acquiring streaming video company Twitch for nearly $1 billion. Now, Microsoft plunks down $2.5 billion for Minecraft, the Lego-like 'sandbox' game where players spend countless hours crafting any world their imaginations can conjure. The reason behind all three of these big deals in the video game industry comes down to one word: engagement.

Vietnam soldiers receive Medal of Honor nearly 50 years later

One killed over 100 soldiers in a 38-hour battle. The other died when he threw himself on a grenade to save his comrades. The extraordinary valor of now-retired Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Bennie Adkins and Spc. Donald Sloat, killed in 1970, was belatedly recognized after a painstaking search of files going back to World War II. In 2002, researchers started looking through files to see if Jewish or Hispanic Americans from past conflicts were denied the nation's highest valor award for bigoted reasons. The result was an extraordinary ceremony in March where 24 medals were awarded by Obama. As researchers uncovered those cases, they found others, including those of Adkins and Sloat.
