Three years ago, a gunman in a parked car fired seven shots at the White House - smashing a second-floor window just off the first family's formal living room.

And the Secret Service did almost nothing about it.

The stunning security lapse at the President's home was revealed in detail for the first time Saturday.

A Secret Service supervisor initially downplayed the Nov. 11, 2011, shooting as noise from a construction vehicle backfiring, according to The Washington Post.

Hours later, the agency confirmed a shooting had occurred but wrongly insisted the gunman was not targeting the White House. The agency suspected the shooting was carried out by gangbangers in a gunfight.

It wasn't until five days later that the Secret Service realized the shots had hit the White House, the Post reported.

The gunman, Oscar Ortega-Hernandez, was arrested - but the Obamas were reportedly furious over the bungled response.
