On Thursday, Mr Hollande discovered that a gossip magazine, Closer, was planning to publish photos of him entering and exiting an apartment near the Elysee Palace where, it is alleged, he carried out an affair with Julie Gayet, 41, an actress.
Mr Hollande's girlfriend, Valerie Trierweiler, was so shocked at the news she was taken to hospital on Thursday evening.
On Friday the magazine was published - with the 600,000 copies selling out across the country.
Miss Gayet has not been seen; Miss Trierweiler remains in hospital; this afternoon Mr Hollande has to face the press at his annual, formal conference.
