Surfers watched a great white shark hooked to a fishing line attack a swimmer at a California beach Saturday morning.

The snagged shark wandered too close to a Manhattan Beach pier where a swimming was training about 60 feet off the Los Angeles County shore for long distance swims, according to County of Los Angeles Fire Department.

The 10-foot-long shark bit the swimmer in a panic after the fishermen allegedly had it hooked for about 45 minutes prior to the attack, reported the Manhattan Beach Patch.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital with a bleeding bite wound to his right rib, Patch photos show. The victim was awake and talking to paramedics after the 9:30 a.m. attack.

Witnesses thought the swimmer couldn't swim and some surfers paddled over to help. Aram Ozen, a nearby surfer, immediately heard people frantically scream, 'White, white!' as they stampeded back to shore, he told the Los Angeles Times.

Life guards in boats guided the shark back to sea after they closed two miles of beach, reported Patch.

The victim is in stable condition, the Times reported.
