Movie Review: 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

What a bunch of losers.

That's the most accurate way to describe the quirky, bruised main characters that inhabit Marvel's supernaturally enjoyable 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'

It's a waste of time explaining the plot for the comic-book epic, because it's wafer thin in this flick. What's worth noting is that it's set in space during an intergalactic political crisis, there's an army of villains and, most importantly, it's hilarious.

I imagine I stand with the majority of moviegoers when I say a vocabulary-challenged tree, a feisty, foul-mouthed raccoon, a reddish-gray rage monster, a green ninja and a dorky guy nicknamed Star-Lord don't land on the top 10 list of most notable superheros. Maybe not even the top 50.

Groot, Rocket, Drax, Gamora and Peter Quill are more superzeros than anything, and they're why this movie is so enjoyable. They don't need a lengthy backstory or countless flashbacks to learn they're a pack of exceptional weirdos together or alone. There's already a ton of comic books to enrich those stories.

Instead, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' smushes its protagonists together and lets their outlandish personalities do the talking. The result? A freewheeling adventure from some of the most odd, funny comic-book characters that have ever jumped from page to screen.
