ST. LOUIS - With the Kansas star Andrew Wiggins scoring just 4 points, the second-seeded Jayhawks were bounced from the N.C.A.A. tournament Sunday by 10th-seeded Stanford, 60-57. Wiggins, who is likely to be one of the top picks in the upcoming N.B.A. draft, made one of his six shots from the floor, missed both his 3-point attempts.
Stanford (23-12) will next face Dayton in the Round of 16 in Memphis.
Kansas (25-10) shot 32.8 percent from the field in the game, was outrebounded by 37-35 and did not get the boost from its bench that it typically expects. The substitute Jamari Traylor, who racked up 17 points and 14 rebounds in Kansas' victory over Eastern Kentucky on Friday, had 3 points and 5 rebounds.
Trailing for most of the game, Kansas made a brief run with about four minutes left, with a 7-1 surge tying the game.
Entering the final minute, Stanford held a 53-51 lead. Two free throws by Dwight Powell widened the gap, and after his Cardinal teammate Anthony Brown made one of two free-throw attempts with 43.6 seconds remaining, Kansas' Naadir Tharpe missed a layup. Brown then went back to the line and sank two free throws for a 7-point Stanford lead.
The Jayhawks' Connor Frankamp made a long 3-pointer with 23.1 seconds left. Brown added another free throw, but Frankamp was unbowed, sinking another 3-pointer to trim Kansas' lead to 59-57.
Brown went to the foul line with 12.9 seconds to play and made one of his two attempts. Frankamp had an opportunity to tie the game, but his 3-point attempt was partly blocked, and it fell short about two seconds before the final buzzer.
Kansas' offense appeared completely out of sync in the first half, with Wiggins scoring 2 points in the period and the team missing several layups, and the Jayhawks also seemed a step slow covering Stanford's tall frontcourt. Still, they stayed within a few points of the Cardinal, and in the final minute of the half, Traylor scored on a tip-in. Frankamp then sank a long 3-pointer just before the buzzer, giving Kansas a 24-22 lead.
