TUCSON, Arizona-- Students at the University of Arizona anxiously watched and awaited the results of their basketball team's game against the University of Wisconsin, gathered on University Boulevard.
When the team lost in overtime, the crowd was immediately emotional.
According to Arizona's student newspaper the Daily Wildcat, police declared an unlawful assembly on the street.
That's when things got hairy.
Dozens of police were already on scene and several students reportedly threw smoke bombs.
Police responded to the sense of aggression with what the paper believed was tear gas, which incited a riot.
'Students are being shot with bean bag rounds,' the paper live-tweeted.
A reporter for the student newspaper trying to cover the incident was also shot.
Fans also began to throw beer and sparklers at police, resulting in multiple arrests.
Students were seen vomiting as a result of the alleged tear gas and cops used force to subdue several students.
According to the police department, pepper balls and pepper canisters were used against crowds.
The crowd disseminated after a while.
