At least eight firefighters have been injured while battling a 9-alarm, wind-whipped blaze that broke out in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood.


The inferno began in the basement of a four-story brownstone at 298 Beacon St. around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, the Boston Fire Department tweeted.


Eight firefighters have been taken to area hospitals, according to Boston EMS, but the extent of their injuries is unclear.

One smoke-eater was in cardiac arrest as his desperate colleagues loaded him into an amublance, WCVB-TV reported.

The city is experiencing 45 mph wind gusts Wednesday.


A 9-alarm fire means the blaze is severe enough to bring out all available fire crews, WCVB-TV reported.


No residents are reported missing. Massachusetts General Hospital says they are treating two patients.
