An off-duty Cook County sheriff's police officer was fatally shot in Bellwood late Friday, authorities said.
The post commander at the west suburb's Veterans of Foreign Wars hall confirmed that a shooting happened there.
The commander, Jerry Artis said the shooting occurred at about 7:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the hall, 200 30th Ave. in the west suburb.
Artis did not have any further information.
The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that someone was pronounced dead late Friday at Loyola University Medical after an apparent shooting. The office could not immediately provide additional information, a representative said.
Bellwood police did not immediately respond to request for comment.
