United States Navy Successfully Tests New Laser Weapon

Real-life naval combat now looks like a video game, only it's truly lethal and without a reset button.

The Defense Department announced it has deployed a laser weapon that can disable an enemy ship or shoot down aircraft.

The navy released video of the laser weapons system, or 'LAWS,' being tested in the Persian Gulf.

The system uses a video game-style controller to target and shoot an invisible 30-kilowatt beam at targets.

In the test, the operator successfully hit objects on an unmanned vessel, and shot drone aircraft out of the sky.

The next versions of the laser weapons system will have a hundred-fifty-kilowatt beam, or five times the destructive force.

Those weapons will be deployed starting in 2016.
