GAITHERSBURG, Md. - A small plane crashed into a house Monday in suburban Washington, igniting it and two single-family homes around it, authorities said.
The area is less than a mile from Montgomery County Airpark, an airport for private planes about 20 miles north of the nation's capital.
Pete Piringer of Montgomery County Fire and Rescue could not immediately say whether anyone was in the Gaithersburg house at the time of the crash or how many people were injured or killed.
The plane appears to seat between six and 10 people, Piringer said. It crashed into one home, setting it and two other homes on fire.
Crews have the fire under control and are conducting a search and rescue operation to find anyone who was in the three homes and the plane, he said.
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending an investigator to the scene, a spokesman said.
