ROSTOV-ON-DON, July 27, 3:47 /ITAR-TASS/. Two Ukrainian border guards have laid down arms and crossed into Russia's southern Rostov region for asylum. They want to apply for Russian citizenship, Vasily Malayev, a spokesperson for the regional border department, told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

'Unwilling to fight, Ukrainian border guards crossed into Russia and asked the Russian authorities for asylum. A major and a senior warrant officer said they wanted to apply for Russian citizenship,' Malayev said.

On Saturday night, more than 40 Ukrainian servicemen left their military units and asked the militias to help them cross into Russia because they did not want to fight against their own people. All Ukrainian servicemen passed through the Donetsk border post. They thanked the militias who had helped them.

The troopers were given meals and an opportunity to rest. Most servicemen who used to be mobilized in Ukraine asked for permission to go back home via the territory of Russia despite the responsibility they were going to face in Ukraine, law enforcers told Itar-Tass.
