A father walking with his young child was killed by a small aircraft that crash landed along a Florida beach, police say.

The pilot and his passenger in the 1972 Piper Cherokee could not make it back to the Venice Airport and sent out a distress signal before attempting to land on a beach near Venice, according to Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

They were uninjured during the 2:45 p.m. rough landing, but a man walking with his daughter was killed. It's not clear if he was hit by the plane or debris, Wendy Rose, a spokeswoman with the Sheriff's Office, told the Daily News.

The little girl was airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg in critical condition.

The identity of her father has not been released.

The National Transportation Safety Board is en route to the crash site, Rose added.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
