A Florida prosecutor said today that a Boston FBI agent was justified in using deadly force to shoot and kill a friend of one of the suspected Boston Marathon bombers in May, saying the man attacked the agent with a long pole as the agent and Massachusetts State Police interrogated him in his Orlando apartment.

Todashev was shot seven times in the incident. He was shot in self-defense of another, the report found.

Ibragim Todashev, a 27-year-old mixed-martial arts fighter, had allegedly confessed to authorities that his friend, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, had participated in the 2011 killings of three Waltham men.

The reports mark the first detailed findings about the fatal shooting of Todashev since the May 22 shooting. The FBI's own internal review was completed months ago but the report is still awaiting a final review by the Department of Justice's civil rights division, which is also expected to exonerate the agent.

For more than 10 months, the bureau has refused to release the autopsy results or basic details, such as whether Todashev was armed, leading to widespread skepticism about the integrity of the investigation.

Todashev's father, Abdulbaki Todashev, a government official on leave in Todashev's native Chechnya, a region in southern Russia, has said in the past that he would consider a wrongful death lawsuit against the bureau. He has also sent photos of his son's bullet-ridden body to President Obama and urged him to investigate the case.

The father said his son did nothing wrong and had voluntarily met with the FBI several times before he was killed.
