Invitation to Death: Marysville Shooter Jaylen Fryberg Lured Victims to Lunch

Bookmark and Share

The Washington high-school freshman who shot five friends in the school cafeteria, killing two, invited them to the ambush by text message, police revealed on Monday. Jaylen Fryberg, 15, used a relative's legal .40 caliber Berretta pistol to gun down his pals and then shoot himself in Friday's attack at Marysville Pilchuck High School near Seattle. Fryberg did not leave behind a note and investigators are still combing through text messages to determine a motive. 'I don't know if the why is going to be something we can provide,' Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary said.

He said it was clear that Fryberg meant to target the victims. 'We know that the shooter had arranged to meet with friends at the lunch table,' he said. 'It's our understanding he did so by texting.'

One girl died, Zoe Galasso, died at the scene. Another, Gia Soriano, 14, died at the hospital on Sunday evening. Shaylee Chuckulnaskit, 14, was in critical condition at Providence Regional Medical Center while Andrew Fryberg, 15, was in critical condition and Nate Hatch, 14, was in serious condition at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center.
