A sick baby stranded with her family nearly 1,000 miles off the coast of Mexico in the Pacific Ocean has safely boarded a Navy ship.
Four California Air National Guardsmen parachuted into the water, inflated a dingy and had reached the little girl's crippled sailboat by early Sunday morning. With powerful winds blowing, the four pararescuemen stayed with the family on the sailboat until light, and then transported them the Navy's USS Vandergrift, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Parents Eric and Charlotte Kaufman sent out distress calls on Thursday, begging for help for 1-year-old Lyra, who had become seriously ill. The Kaufmans were trying to sail around the world on their boat, Rebel Heart, when they ran into trouble 900 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Sailors aboard the Vandergrift will conduct a medical evaluation of Lyra as the ship heads for San Diego.
