A 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, and tsunami warnings were issued for the island chain and its neighbors.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

The center said 'It is not known that a tsunami was generated. This warning is based only on the earthquake evaluation.'

The quake struck around 7:15 a.m. local time and occurred about 62 miles southeast of the town of Kirakira, Solomon Islands, at a depth of 18.2 miles, the USGS reported.

The temblor originally was registered as a magnitude-8.3 before being revised downward.
