LONDON - Commuter chaos struck London as the capital's 3.5 million Tube users fought long delays as workers from the underground train system went on strike.

Subway workers are protesting planned job cuts and the closing of ticket offices, and the disruptions brought turmoil Wednesday to the travel routines of many who use the city's 150-year-old network of underground trains. Many opted to take the bus, where long lines formed, and big crowds formed outside of the number of limited stations that remained open.

Transport for London, which operates the subway system, has said that the jobs cuts are part of plans to modernize the network.

The first of two 48-hour walkouts began Tuesday evening and will run until the early hours of Friday. The second is due to take place next week.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has described the strike as 'pointless and unnecessary' while union leader Bob Crow called the walkouts 'rock solid.'
