A California educator who was confronted by a former student on YouTube last month has been charged with 16 felony counts of sexual abuse.

Andrea Cardosa, 40, was charged Monday with five counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child and 11 other counts of abuse by the Riverside County District Attorney's office.

Cardosa, formerly of Riverside and Val Verde Unified School Districts, is accused of sexually abusing a former student from 1997 to 2001 before abusing a second high school student in 2009 or 2010, according to the district attorney's office.

The shocking case against Cardosa first case came to light after a now 28-year-old Jamie Carrillo posted a video on YouTube showing her making a call to confront Cardosa about the abuse allegations that she said began when she was 12.

Carrillo said that she chose to publicly reveal the alleged crimes against Cardosa the way she did because she believed that a statute of limitations -- with the abuse allegedly taking place more than 13 years ago -- would prevent the former educator from being criminally charged.

But according to the district's Senior Public Information Specialist John Hall, the five counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child carry potential life sentences meaning that a statute of limitations does not apply.

Hall also defended that the allegations by the second younger victim, who came forward just after Carrillo, would have been within the legal time frame.

Hall declined to say what evidence may be brought against Cardosa, but told the Daily News that what they have is 'based on the evidence that we were given from the Riverside Police Department.'

At this time Hall said that they don't know of any other victims that may be out there, but they are imploring any others to come forward.

'We've only charged her with two victims but as with any time you have a case like these there's always a potential that there may be more victims out there,' he said. He asked that anyone else who has been abused come forward.

The district attorney's office says a $5 million warrant has been issued for Cardosa's arrest.

Cardosa's lawyer, Randy Collins, said he couldn't immediately comment as he had not yet been advised by prosecutors of the charges.
