The U.S. government put airlines flying into Russia for the Winter Olympics on alert for bombs being smuggled in toothpaste tubes.
The Department of Homeland Security put out the warning but did not say what triggered it.

The winter games begin on Thursday in Sochi, Russia, under high alert for radical Islamic terrorists who have launched a campaign of suicide bombings in the area in recent weeks.
'While we are not aware of a specific threat to the homeland at this time, this routine communication is an important part of our commitment to making sure we meet that priority,' an U.S. official told ABC News of the toothpaste alert.

'As always, our security apparatus includes a number of measures, both seen and unseen, and DHS will continue to adjust security measures to fit an ever evolving threat environment.'
Officials fear terrorists will try to sneak explosives or bomb-making ingredients in toothpaste tubes on flights headed to Russia.

The warning comes a month after Russian officials banned passengers from taking all liquids onto planes headed for Sochi on the Black Sea.
Sochi is only about 300 miles from the troubled North Caucasus, which has become a hotbed for Islamic militant insurgency.

Chechen Islamic radical Doku Umarov, known as Russia's Osama bin Laden, has encouraged followers to go all out to disrupt the Olympic Games.
