Pennsylvanians can choose from 11 federal health plans during open enrollment

Open enrollment to get insurance from the federal Health Insurance Marketplace begins on Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15, 2015.

Updates were made to HealthCare.gov last week.

Eleven plans are available to Pennsylvania residents. The levels of insurance plans offered include catastrophic, bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

Insurers will offer plans in specific geographic areas throughout Pennsylvania. These areas can be found at www.haponline.org.

Preferred provider plans (PPOs) will be offered through Blue Cross-NEPA, Capital Blue Cross, Geisinger Choice and Highmark. HealthAmerica and Keystone Health Plan Central are offering health maintenance plans (HMOs).

Insurers Aetna, HealthAmerica, Capital Blue Cross, Keystone Health Plan Central and UPMC Health Plan will not offer platinum-level products, but will offer a variety of plans from the other levels. Geisinger Health Plans will offer a point-of-service plan.

Changes to this year's open enrollment will affect platinum plans, tax-credits, cost sharing and individual responsibility. This year's program also includes coverage renewal, done automatically unless an individual takes steps to change their plan.

This is the second open enrollment for the program. In the first open enrollment, approximately 320,000 uninsured Americans were able to purchase health care plans.
