Former President George HW Bush joins Twitter

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Former President George H.W. Bush, who turned 89 in June, joined Twitter on Tuesday, becoming the latest living commander-in-chief to connect on the popular microblogging site.

'Barbara and I wish we could have joined the U.S. delegation honoring President Mandela today,' Bush tweeted, for the first time, under the handle @GeorgeHWBush. 'He, and his countrymen, are in our prayers.'

Bush did not travel to South Africa with President Obama and former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter due to advice from his doctors.

Although his account has not yet been verified by Twitter, a Bush spokesman confirmed it was legitimate.

Just hours after the former leader joined Twitter, he had already attracted nearly 25,000 followers.

Bush follows in the steps of Clinton, who joined Twitter in April. George W. Bush has not joined the network.
